Human evil is something humanity has dealt with since we arrived on this planet. Why is it that some are prone to doing evil while others are not?
We are the only species that willingly goes out and murders others.
No amount of lectures or scientific data or psychiatric tests or learned men giving their take on this issue has produced results or answers.
Maybe because there isn't just one answer, but many?
I believe the capacity for evil is something we all have within us, more or less, but it doesn't rise to the surface and consume the majority of us, just some. Why?
Would you agree that we all are responsible (or irresponsible) for our actions.
When you get right down to statistics, how many people actually go out and commit evil? - - very few if compared to the billions of people on this planet.
Yet, the taking of just one life is too much.
Can you test for evil? Well, yes and or no depending on how cunning the person's response to the questions are. So, if evil isn't readily recognizable, what can we do as compassionate human beings in order to thwart it?
There is talk about if you "see something say something." This has merit but, if not watched closely, can end up with innocent people going to jail.
At one point in our learning process, the taking of human life was severely frowned upon. The accused were tried and severely punished. Sending a message to others...
Nowadays what do we hear most about? - - abortion, the killing of babies. To Planned Parenthood and millions of mothers who support the taking of an infant's life, there is nothing wrong (or evil) here.
In big cities across the country, gangs thrive on violence in which the novice "would be" gang member is instructed to go out and kill someone in order to be approved and accepted.
We have road rage in which somebody seems to think it's okay to take out their frustrations on another person by mowing them down with their vehicle.
Have parents abandoned their role as parents? Are schools teaching kids that bullying is unacceptable and can lead to more harmful acts?
Where are the churches and synagogues and pastors and rabbis and priests on this issue?
Collectively, we all live on this planet. We're supposed to be one big happy family but are far from it.
Since when did it become the norm to take a baby's life? Since when did it become acceptable that a gang member can just go out and shoot an innocent person? Since when did it become the norm that we can take our automobile and use it as a weapon? Since when did it become fashionable (to many it is) that we now have terrorist groups in this country who openly support and encourage their members to go out and maim or kill others?
Since when? - - Since now.
Maybe we should be looking at our politicians, our schools, the news media and Hollywood for some of the answers. But, more importantly, maybe we should be looking at ourselves.
We have a morality drought in this country and it's killing us.
From this day forward commit to yourself that you are going to watch what you say and what you do. Try and be more respectful in your dealings with others, refraining from hitting the rage button but, instead, if there's a disagreement or a problem, try working things out.
You and me... ("We") are all responsible for the safety of our children, families, homes, communities, schools and our nation.
"We" are all one. When are we gonna start acting like it?
