Cold and Blustery

Monday, November 11, 2019:  The meteorologist said that today was going to be a day for record breaking cold temperatures across the planet.  

A strong and deep, very powerful and frigid air mass was making its way toward us and all the way from Siberia. 

He warned of dropping temps (way below freezing) bottoming out tomorrow morning and blustery wind gusts to 45mph throughout the day.    We're talking in the teens where I am and virtually unheard of for November.    

As I was soon to find out, he wasn't kidding.

I just had a nanny kid on the 10th and was particularly worried about her and her two little ones.

Worked all day, ensuring livestock and poultry were protected.   Put grain out for animals, a heater in the chicken coop, one in the livestock tank, brought wood in for the fireplace, covered tender plants and hydrants, put more hay in the dog houses and another heater in the garage for Pepper, my newest little stray.   

I continued working throughout the day buffeted by horrific wind gusts and dropping temps.  The sky continued to fill with billowing, dark clouds.     

That night I lay in bed and listened to the wind blowing the trees and hitting the house.  It continued to bluster and blow until this morning, (November 12, 2019) not subsiding and winding down until the wee hours.   I was particularly concerned for my livestock.   

This morning, I sat up in bed and watched the sunrise.  What a welcome sight after last night as its warmth slowly crept over the landscape, warming everything and everyone. 

I could finally go out and check on my animals. 

The goats were out of their shelters and facing east soaking up the sun warming their bodies after a very windy and frigid night.   

Now I could sit down and enjoy my first cup of coffee.

There's More to a Neanderthal Than Just Good Looks

If you heat your house with wood, start stocking up now.  If you have livestock or other animals outside I recommend you put in a frostless hydrant.  These hydrants don't freeze like normal hydrants and are built to withstand frigid temps so you'll have an ample supply of water for your critters.  

Take a look at whether you need to have some more insulation in your home around doors and windows or any other place that needs it. 

For some months now I've had the feeling we're going to be in for a very cold winter which isn't normal for my area.  Last winter we had a cold snap with 20 deg. and colder for maybe three weeks but this year it sounds like we're in for some bitter cold that's going to be hanging around for awhile.   

My feelings were confirmed when I read the Old Farmers Almanac that in my area we're in for bitter cold which points to a miserable winter for animals, birds and humans.

Forewarned is to take the steps necessary and make the preparations in order to protect yourself and   those you care for and love.      

This feeling started after the beginning of this year's haying season when acreage that normally yielded 200 round bales only produced 27.
 
This year the rain fell at the wrong time, it didn't rain when it was supposed to and when it did rain it virtually drowned everything.  Plus, it was blistering hot with high humidity so the grass didn't grow the way it should.   

For livestock producers and those custom baling hay, the yields this year are way way down.

One bale of grass hay weighing approx. 800# is going for $70.00 and that was the price last week.  Normally you could buy a bale for a lot less so for the livestock producers with 100 head or more or even those producers with 30, 40 head if they didn't have a surplus of hay on hand they either sold the majority of their cows already or will have to pay a hefty price for forage.  And a cow needs more than hay when it's bitter cold in order to get through the winter.  And to make matters more difficult, cows generally calve in February and March.  It takes a lot of energy food (grain) also to keep an animal with enough body heat to sustain an abnormally cold winter and bring forth a healthy baby.   

It takes one bale of hay per cow per winter and if the winter is extreme, the animal is going to need more hay.   

If one bale weighs 800# (which is approx. a 4x5 bale of grass hay) and you need a ton of hay that would be 2-1/2 bales @ $180.00 a ton. 

You can't feed many animals on just one ton of hay.

The garden and orchard didn't do well this year either.  Too much rain, too little rain, too hot, too humid.

So, I'm passing this info on to you.  Wherever you are start looking at what winter holds for you and start making preparations.  

There's a little piece of Neanderthal in all of us.

Hang Me Out to Dry

Well I don't know about you but it's sweltering here.  We usually have hot summer days but no humidity.  I remember, about 15 years ago putting in a half mile of barb wire fence in 105 deg. weather.  No sweat!  But now, it actually feels like Florida.  If it's 99 degrees the temperature index (what it actually feels like on your skin ) is from 105 to 110.  It's up early in the morning to do chores and then later in the afternoon.  Yesterday I overdid it with some weeding in a flower garden and ended up with a headache.  And we're only in July!

Another interesting thing that is occurring are the t-storms.  As a rule the weather comes in from the west and proceeds east.  We're all familiar with this.  Lately, the storms are doing just the opposite.  Forming in the east and heading to the west, northwest.  Last night a biggie (tremendous and jaw dropping thunder) was just northeast of us but no rain.  It just hung over us.

I'm not a fan of "Climate" Change as I believe that most of it is BS.   But I do take note of things we're all used to seeing, that have me puzzled, like storms moving east to west instead of like they used to.

Between the extreme humidity and storms acting weird, maybe we all should be taking notice.

UPDATE:  These are actual temps not the heat index:  It was 106 degrees on Wednesday, July 18; 107 degrees on Thursday, July 19; 108 degrees on Friday, July 20th; 106 (instead of the 109 they predicted) degrees on Saturday, July 21st; 102 on Sunday, July 22 and Monday, July 23.  Today it's gonna be 99 - 100 degrees and tomorrow 101.

What's Up?

We were having lunch together and my friend agreed that we both have the same feeling with what we're seeing with the weather, this year.  A massive heat wave in India that has killed thousands; flooding in Tbilisi, Georgia that resulted in animals escaping.  A Hippopotamus had to be tranquilized; lions and tigers were on the loose as zookeepers tried their best to round them up.  One lion was shot to death and three zookeepers died.  In North America we had four different weather forecasts in one day--one for each season of the year.  Extreme heat in the Southeast; snow in the northwest; unprecedented flooding in the heartland; colder than normal temps in the East.  And let's not forget California which is in its worst drought in ten years.

California is where many of this country's fruits and veggies are grown.  The farmers are having to drill deeper to access water to irrigate their crops.  Some wells are at 1200+ feet.  And government is not helping as all they're doing is piling on more red tape and regulations.

I've not read anywhere where a large planetary body moving through the heavens could possibly affect our weather (how?  I don't know...maybe disrupting the jet stream or penetrating the shield covering the earth that protects all of us from the heat of the sun, thus, somehow, affecting and destabilizing our weather).

We've had loud, unnerving trumpeting sounds emanating from above heard by people all over the earth.  And no one has figured out where they're coming from or what they are.

The question is, "Is someone trying to get our attention and, if so, why?"

I think I have the answer.
