From Dark to Light

Not many people know that earth revolves around the sun, including myself.  I believe it is important we know facts about our home (Earth) and other pertinent data related to it and therefore the reason I am posting this.

Earth's name evolved from the eighth century Anglo-Saxon name "erda" which means ground or soil.

The earth revolves around the sun.  It has an elliptical (slightly oval shape) orbit due to the pull of the sun's gravitational field.

It also spins on its axis as it goes around the sun in an easterly direction and one full rotation takes 24 hours which accounts for day and night.

The earth is 94,000,000 miles from the sun.

The exception to this day and night is the South Pole located in Antarctica and the other point located 450 miles north of Greenland known as the North Pole.

The sun doesn't rise at the South Pole from February to November (continually dark) while at the North Pole the sun shines 24 hours a day from June 21st (beginning of summer) until September 21 (beginning of fall) and continually light.

It takes 365.25 days for the earth to revolve around the sun (the extra .25 is accounted for by a leap year in the Gregorian Calendar (see footnote below) in February every four years).

The sun has a solar "maximum" and a solar "minimum" period each eleven years long.

By this it means that the sun is most active in its maximum cycle (solar flares, CMEs, etc.) while passive or quiet during its minimum cycle.

We are in a solar minimum right now that began in 2013.  We have 4 more years until we are actually in a new cycle in which the sun will become more active in 2024.
