And a Young Child Shall Lead Them

We all want what's best for our children.

We have a responsibility to see they are loved and disciplined, counseled and educated, steered in the right direction when it comes to their future.

We, as parents, know what's best.

But what if a child is adamant, insisting that he or she wants to enter a particular field and you're taken aback because of the complete confidence they have in their decision?

You argue that they are going to have a rough road ahead with years of a strict curriculum, long and tedious hours of study and lab work and a lengthy test to see if all that learning paid off.

You boldly proclaim that you know what's best for them and chalk their exuberance up to inexperience, something they saw on television or a conversation they had with one of their friends.
But what if your child demonstrates an innate knowing, an inexplicable ability to detail and express why they feel the way they do, showing an uncanny knowledge of a field they could not possibly even know?

We must stop being so rote in our ways and learn the art of listening, not only to our own children but with each other.

We as parents are forced to admit that we don't have all the answers to this life we're experiencing.

In fact, all of us, parents included, continue to struggle to find just one.
